    IR Filter Recommendations...

    by Remorhaz » Sat Jan 07, 2012 1:14 pm

I'm thinking about experimenting with some IR photography - I'm not quite ready to modify a DSLR body for this so I was thinking of starting with one of those screw in IR filters. I'd like to get a 77mm one and so...

anyone with any experience with these - do they work satisfactorily
any recommendations for brand/type/model/etc of filter
anything tips or anything else major I should consider when using one of these

    Thanks...

I've been playing around for the last couple of months with a Hoya R72 on my Fuji X100. I can shoot this at between 1/15 - 1/60 and f2 so hand held is possible but a tripod is preferred.

The R72 seems to be the best option to start off with as it isn't too expensive and lets more wavelengths through in the near IR range. Have a look on the Flickr IR groups, I found some good links through there to other pages.

I suspect the D7000 sensor has a very strong IR filter though so I'd look very closely at whether it can actually do much if that is the camera you will be using. My understanding is that most new DSLR's aren't good unless modified to IR.
