by Tim » Fri Jul 17, 2009 5:49 pm

First of all, You need a cow topic

Moderator/Admin Please create a New COW Topic like this with the correct dates for the selected COW in the moderator forum so all moderators and admin can put in there selection before its displayed before all members.
Capture of the Week - 28th Jun to 4th Jul 2009

Visit http://www.digitalslr.com.au/forum/img.php to see all selected images of the week, select an image using the little box beside the image and scroll down and click on the select button. You will end up with Code looking like this.

    Code: Select all

    Something a bit fishy ?

Copy and paste the code into the New topic then edit it so it appears like this making sure to include the posters name in the title, please also number each one so that its easier for members to find it on the list.

    Code: Select all

    #1 Dug's Something a bit fishy ?

You should end up with something looking like this.

    #1 Dug's Something a bit fishy ?
    Image

Once all moderators have added there selection to the post (via Editing the original post and adding to it) and the cow has reached chosen selection time, Move post to Capture of the Week forum.. make sure that the topic is locked so no-one can comment or reply to topic until end of the week.

Move the Old cow to the Past Capture of the Week forum and make unlocked.

    Displaying New Cow Winner

Save/Download winning cow image and resize it to 225pixels max width and save it online where it can be accessed by the forum.. flickr or something like that.

This is something for admins to do unfortunately mods, you dont have the power...

Access the Admin Area and head to the General Admin Tab, Click on Configuration.

You will see a box called POTW Description... (Ahh this is where the fun starts!)

Edit this code to the correct Cow winner and posts

    Code: Select all

    This Week's COW is by Bart<br />
    <a href="http://www.digitalslr.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13924">Click Here to See the COW </a><br />
    <a href="http://www.digitalslr.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13924">Vote for next week's COW</a>

Edit the path to POTW Thumbnail URL to the new Thumbnail you've just created of this week's winning COW.

Tricky bit, If you dont do this, you will lose the Last 6 Active Topics Window...

Under the IP masking Block on the Configuration page is a small text box, it's blank.. it always is and always will be, this needs to have 6 in it before you hit submit... It is just above Cookie Settings in Configuration

Once you have done all that.. hit submit, and you should have updated the cow successfully!

I also forgot to mention, tag the winner

To tag the winner, visit Administration Panel, scroll down to User Admin on the left hand side, click on Management.

Type in the winners name. Once the members details have appeared, scroll down to the bottom. you will see Special Admin-only fields. you will see a drop down box called Rank Title, click on that and select Golden Cow... click Submit and your done.

At the end of the cow week, re-visit the member and set them as No Special Rank Assignment unless they are a Site Admin or Moderator... or something else fun or wacky... we havent dropped a mouseketeer on anyone lately!!

Pretty much, except I modified the page that shows the images from the week so that it runs from Sunday to Sunday, I thought it would be a bit easier to get on top of on a Sunday evening instead of a Saturday.

    New link is here.

I had a look there are images missing from through the week.

    Searching from 5pm Fri 27/8/10 to 5pm Fri 3/9/10

Okay, new page for creating COWs.

    http://www.digitalslr.com.au/forum/thad ... _admin.php

This will show you the images which you select according to nominated images by forum members then click the "Create Shortlist" button at the bottom.

Cut and paste the main code of the message, i.e.

    Code: Select all

Remorhaz's Yet More Boring SHB & SOH Images :)...

    Busiboy's Untitled

Then use the list below that to create the poll.

    Code: Select all

#1 Remorhaz's Yet More Boring SHB & SOH Images :)...
    #2 Busiboy's Untitled

On a typical day you can do 6 to 8 entries in 2 - 3 minutes including selecting the images for nomination.

Also don't forget to create a new Global announcement for the next weeks nominations. Typically I edit the current nomination message and copy the code to notepad, change the dates and the link to the current COW poll and set the message from Global announcement to normal message.

Then create a new message, fill in the message title and copy the code from notepad into the message body. Set to Global announcement, hit submit and Bob's your uncle.

How do you change the COW from user to User week to week?

Also how do you change the image on the front page showing the winning shot for the week?

To change the user you go to the Administration panel and under Users there is a management page. You enter the name of the user to get to their details page, in there you can set the Rank Title of the user, No Special Rank for a normal user, Golden Cow for this week's COW winner.

The COW image is 255px wide and is uploaded to the root of the site. I will have to work something out that lets you upload the new image to the site.

    Re: Creating a COW

    by Dalzine » Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:09 pm

Some changes to go with the new version of the board.

Selecting the COW is the same, however when using cow_admin.php you will get a list at the bottom of the page which you can cut and paste directly into the poll choice box. See the screen grabs for info.
    pollList.png

    pollList2.png

You can move forum threads from the bottom of the page now, you don't have to go into the main category section (e.g. Capture Of the Week).
    moveTopic.png

    moveTopic2.png

To change the information on the front of the forum you use the Announcement Centre which is found in Admin under the "mods" tab.
    AnnounceTab.png

Change the name of the COW winner and the links to see this week's COW and vote for next week's COW. Notice the URL for both, the "see the COW" uses p= while the "Vote for COW" uses t=.

Any changes you make here must be saved by clicking the two buttons below labled "Copy to site text" and "Copy to guest text". You have to click both these buttons before you click the submit button. VERY IMPORTANT.
    announce.png

To set a user to be the Golden Cow (and to take them off) you go to the Users and Groups tab, enter the user name and change their rank by using the drop down on the top right to select "RANK" then set their rank in the middle.
    rank.png

That's pretty much it. You will also need to add the link the new COW image in the announcement centre. try to make the image no larger than 400px on it's longest side.

Also the announcement to get people to nominate for next week's COW, just copy the text from the old one and change the dates and link to vote for the current COW. If you set the message to Global Announcement it will automatically be put on the front page.
