I think one of the best things you can do for sunrise or sunset shots is to invest in a Neutral Density Grad Filter, or even a reverse nd grad. The filter will help even out the exposure between the bright sky and the darker foreground giving a more balanced look closer to what we would see with the our eye. The second thing is to ensure you use a tripod so you have the option of using slower shutter speeds and a smaller f stop for more dof.
I use Lee filters, good quality but expensive, and I also have a Singh Ray reverse grad.
