    South Island, New Zealand

We flew into Christchurch on Boxing Day and were greeted with amazing views. Just from peering out of the window I knew we were in for a great trip.

We spent the rest of the day exploring the Botanic Gardens and Hagel Park. This Giant Gum seemed like a good place for a rest.

The following day we began our road-trip and made our way to Franz Josef via Arthurs Pass.

Spotted a couple of these little guys on our verandah where we were staying, no macro lens but a mobile phone takes suprisingly good photos up close.

we spent the morning in Franz Josef (see Reflecting at Franz Josef), and made our way further South through Wanaka and the Crown Ridge.

Eventually getting to Queenstown after many stops to take in the views. After settling into our apartment we drove up Coronet Peak to watch the sunset over the aptly named "Remarkables"

And another looking towards Queenstown with a play of the In-camera HDR function. Haven't used it much but it was well after dark here and I can see its benefits

Thanks guys, Its an amazing place, and only a 3.5hr flight from Melbourne too. I'd recommend it to anyone.

With so much to see we took to the skies, flying from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Most of the South West of the Island which we flew over is UNESCO World Heritage listed to protect its beauty for many years to come. The earth here is full of resources which I'm sure some billionaire mogul would have no hesitation in exploiting.

If you ever get the chance to do this, and the pilot offers you a co-pilot seat don't be like the guy before me who said no... best view in the plane.

    Image

We then hopped off the plane and onto a boat very similar to this one for a cruise on the sound, take note that the smallest mountain along the sound is 1300m, and this was not it! The boat pictured is not even a quarter of the way across the water.

    Image

We also did some helicopter spotting.

    Image

and a wider view, the waterfall is over 160m High, the helicopter is on the right near the bottom.

NZ is amazing ! I am having a Uni reunion in Christchurch in 3 years .. The last time I was in NZ I had my coolpix5000 :-)

Although I have a Full frame camera now. In 3 years it may be a smaller Mirrorless camera I will be carrying.
