    Canon 580EX flash locking pin

    by RichardW » Sat Feb 16, 2013 7:35 am

Knocked over my tripod with the camera and the flash. :(
The locking wheel on the flash also has a pin which drops into the top of the body.
It is now not engaged by the wheel and the flash is permanently locked onto the camera.
Any ideas on how to free the pin rather than taking it to Canon.
Have tried jiggling it to no avail.

The mechanism pushes the connecting plate of the flash down hard against the hotshoe so I doubt jiggling will work or even trying to slide something thin in from the front to push the pin back up.

You can try tilting the flash back towards the rear of the camera and try to gently force it back, the pin is chamfered so if you can get the front up far enough you might be able to get it to release. I would be very careful though.

    Dale,

    Thanks.
Was able to push in a piece of soft drink container cut to size which pushed up the pin. 8)
After stripping the base down and finding the problem all is good. :D
